In a colourful, make-shift studio in his own apartment, Abraham Menendez designs and handcrafts vibrant ceramic plates that are too pretty to eat off. Inspired by everything from mid-century animation, to Disney, to the last song he listened to; Abraham Menendez makes every single plate by hand, from scratch, and made-to-order. He is the perfect example of the new wave of entrepreneurs in Spain who are going back to small-batch, traditional production methods, selling quality and unique design that is labeled 100% Made in Spain.
“I make decor objects with the sole aim of brightening people’s day-to-day. If a plate or a mug can bring a smile to someone’s face, that for me is already a victory.”

“I make decor objects with the sole aim of brightening people’s day-to-day. If a plate or a mug can bring a smile to someone’s face, that for me is already a victory,” says Menendez as he strokes his dog, Manolito – his most loyal colleague in the office. “While I mainly make ceramics, I’m really excited about my first collection of prints that I’m launching in collaboration with Coordonne.”
While Abe the Ape is sold mostly in Spain, the designer has big plans for taking his brand global. “The next steps for me are trade fairs, getting my name out there in new markets, and building an international presence.” Active on social media, Abe the Ape generates over 50% of its overall sales online. “The power of social media is wonderful. With almost zero investment in publicity, people in China or the U.S can discover you. This is something that, today, continues to amaze me,” says the designer.
With over 20,000 followers across the brand’s various social networks, it’s no wonder that Menendez is looking to take full advantage of this influence and start selling directly to his fans and followers. “Bloombees seemed ideal because of it’s ease-of-use and the number of payment methods it comes with, which I might not have on my eCommerce or elsewhere. I don’t have to worry about integrating other payment platforms myself, and can dedicate time to things that I’m better at.”

With more and more new customers emerging on social media, and increasing sales abroad, Abe the Ape is growing and reaching for that goal of international presence. While Bloombees is helping the brand reach new markets with greater ease, it is Menendez’s own talent that will get Abe the Ape very far. “I dream a lot, and rarely forget these dreams. Whether I like it or not, this is a big plus.”
